RIP Mark Linkous

Mark Linkous AKA Sparklehorse

From the Linkous Family: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear friend and family member, Mark Linkous, took his own life today. We are thankful for his time with us and will hold him forever in our hearts. May his journey be peaceful, happy and free. There’s a heaven and there’s a star for you.” – March 6, 2010

Mark Linkous, a.k.a Sparklehorse, took his own life March 6, 2010.  He was a genius.  Not only was he a great musician, he was a great producer and collaborator.  He produced Daniel Johnston‘s Fear Yourself… a superb album that came out in 2003.  I wrote about Linkous a few months back because of his recent collaboration with Danger Mouse.  Together the two created Dark Night of the Soul and the only reason that it hasn’t come out is due to record label bullshit.  If I remember correctly, he even tried to leak some of his own music content.  I think it was a grand gesture saying, “Fuck you!” to the record label.  Anyway, finally, EMI and Linkous came to an agreement and this week it was announced that the album would be released this summer.  It was supposed to be joyous news for the music fan but it is mixed with true sorrow for the loss of the creator, a true musician.

However, I must say that this shouldn’t come as a big surprise…. In 1995 Linkous literally died for a couple minutes due to ingesting a lethal mix of Valium and antidepressants.  Although he was revived, he laid unconscious for 14 hours and loss circulation in his legs which crippled him.  When people tried to straighten them, he suffered a heart attack.  He went through over five surgeries to repair what was left of his legs.

But from great pain came great music.  From there he went on to create three great albums.  I wish he would’ve been able to see the success of his next album.  I know it will be successful.

Here is The Flaming Lips’s Revenge, which is a track from Dark Night of the Soul.

A tribute by a fan…

Great track!
