I mean, he has always been but lately he has been blowing my mind, rockin’ my ears, and..well… rocking my world! Let me be honest, at first I was reluctant about the new Charlotte Gainsbourg album. Beck + Charlotte = Awesomeness SCARY…or so I thought. The album definitely required a second listen for this here girl. I felt somewhat confused the first go. But then when I gave it a second go, it made more sense. Her breathy, albeit limited, singing voice coupled with Beck‘s producing, playing, and shear genius paired quite nicely. Who woulda thunk it?!? Beck would.
Back to Beck‘s awesomenes…
So there’s the whole Charlotte Gainsbourg pairing thing that is rad. Then, at random I believe, Beck allows free downloads of songs from his previous albums on his website. Free music given out by the artist is ALWAYS a plus!
And now, he has this record club on his website. It is pretty nifty! Instead of me explaining it, let me just give you the excerpt that he provides on the website explaining the process.
Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. The songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to ‘add to’ the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens.
Here is one of my favorite ones from the site as of recently. This is Feist.Vodpod videos no longer available.
*On a side note, I’m writing this post while riding a bus and the girl singing to the radio behind me is not— I repeat NOT— awesome. Singing to a Timberlake/Timberland track on KIIS FM on CSULB’s On-Campus bus isn’t cool. Singing while driving is one thing. Subjecting others while on a bus is a whole different story…
