Yes, yes, yes. I received the new Camera Obscura CD at KBeach and it is more than enough to satisfy my indie pop craving. Gotta love this Scottish band. Mmmm. So– good! It doesn’t stray too far from Let’s Go Out of This Country–and you know what? I am A-OK with that. If you want to get a good idea of the band and it’s potential simply play the first track. Often the band starts the album with a good hearty, catchy tune–and they didn’t fail this time. “French Navy” is a song that is easy to hear and definitely puts a smile on the face.
One thing that IS different from the previous CD is the record label that Camera Obscura is on. Prior to this CD the band was on Merge. And let me tell you, although smaller, Merge is an amazing label to be a part of. Merge has been the label of choice (at some point in their career) for Broken Social Scene, Ryan Adams, The Shins, Bright Eyes, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, Death Cab for Cutie, and many, many more. So one might ask why the band decided to make the change and go to 4AD. To be honest, I don’t know… Maybe it was time for a change, I mean, 4Ad IS a little bit bigger than Merge but I am happy that although Camera Obscura decided to part ways with their previous label, the move did not change the heart of what makes this band truly beautiful. Get the album. It is either out or is coming out soooooon!
PS- if you were wondering what the word “maudlin” means in the title of the band’s new album (Lord knows I did), it means: insincerely emotional.
Here is an awesome track by Camera Obscura if you haven’t heard of them.
