I Wish I Lived in China!

.

.

–for many various reasons but I just added another reason to my list!  Google has joined forces with the four remaining major record labels and also a few indie labels in order to release 1.1 million tracks to the Chinese population only.  The Associated Press explained that these companies include entire catalogues from  Warner Music Group Corp., EMI Group Ltd., Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music as well over a dozen independent labels.  I guess the way that they know you are located in China and not in sayyyyy Long Beach, CA is from your IP address showing that you are in mainland China.

So the idea is to lower music piracy within the country—a country that has over 300 million internet users.  And the way it has been solved is by giving the music for free.  Say what?!?  Yup.  In order to get the music, one must go to Googles download site, Top100.cn.  Advertising will be sold on the site and the profit will be divided by the record labels.

Man, I SO wish I was in China right now.

If you are wondering what artist are on these labels, here are just a few:

  • Atmosphere
  • Gnarls Barkley
  • Beyonce
  • Bjork
  • David Bowie
  • Cream
  • Death Cab for Cutie
  • Paris Hilton (haha)
  • Rilo Kiley
  • Led Zepplin
  • Lynyrd Skynyrd
  • Prince
  • Tom Waits
and that is just a few Warner Music Group!
